Math Instruction

Math Workshop Model

We continue to provide differentiated instruction for our young mathematicians in Clarkston.  The Math Workshop Model provides learners an opportunity to consider, reflect, connect and share their learning with peers and teachers.

A workshop lesson begins with a teacher leading a Mini Lesson that connects to an Engagement Work Time where students work in small groups, partnerships and/or independently to interact with tasks and ends with a Share Time that facilitates reflection and connections.

Math Talk/Number Corners

In addition to Math Workshop instruction, students are engaged in a Math Talk, sometimes referred to as Number Talk or Number Corners.  During this 15-20 minute block, learners participate in whole group discussion around a specific skill and/or concept.

This discussion time aides in connecting and reflecting as mathematicians, as well as strengthens listening/speaking skills and continues to grow the classroom community culture.

Teacher Role

As facilitators of learning, teachers confer with students in small groups, partnerships and/or independently to evaluate learnings and help students make connections to grow learnings.

Our teachers collaborate with their grade level teams (Professional Learning Communities - PLCs) to design and support learning opportunities that meet our students' needs.

As students grow, teachers work diligently to provide feedback to students and families via notes on class work, conversations, etc.
